GKS Mural Project - Brixton

The start of 2006 saw the unveiling, by local MP Keith Hill, of a three-year public art project in Brixton. The project was led by the residents' association of MHT's Glenelg, Kildoran and Strathleven (GKS) elderly sheltered schemes and involved over 700 participants from local schools, youth clubs and sheltered schemes in more than 50 workshops.

Artwork from the workshops, run by a local artist, was used to create four graffiti-resistant vitreous enamel panels which were installed on the exterior wall of the GKS scheme at Glenelg Road, Brixton.

Sky City, Wood Green, Haringey

We worked with residents of Sky City in Wood Green last year to produce an exciting mosaic for their community centre. The external areas of the development had been prone to graffiti and vandalism and residents were keen to take part in measures to solve the problem. We organised a day with community art group arts4space and people living in Sky City contributed ideas for the design, which included a depiction of the estate from the sky and helicopters, planes and birds. Participants worked together to produce the mosaic, developing new skills such as tiling, grouting and sealing.

Broxbourne

In partnership with West Ham FC, Aldwyck Housing Association and Paradigm Housing, MHT gave young residents in schemes in Broxbourne the chance to visit West Ham's Upton Park football stadium for an afternoon training session and tour of the facilities. The day was organised to recognise the success of a project of weekly training sessions run by West Ham which began in summer 2005. Numbers taking part steadily increased over the year and some residents expressed an interest in working towards Level 1 coaching badges, which could lead to a career in a sports-related field.
