Our history

Metropolitan Housing Trust (MHT) originated in the 1950s when Lady Molly Huggins, the wife of the Governor of Jamaica, started the Metropolitan Coloured People's Association to provide good quality, affordable housing for immigrants from the West Indies. Lady Molly first explored the London suburbs of Tottenham and Brixton as suitable neighbourhoods to provide quality, low cost housing. In 1963, MHT was formally established as a housing association and has grown enormously.

50 years on, MHT London has worked on major regeneration schemes of run-down housing estates acquired from London councils. MHT goes beyond providing just bricks and mortar, continuing to work with residents and partners, such as the police and schools, to ensure that neighbourhoods are thriving and safe places to live. We now manage over 16,000 homes and work in partnership with many local authorities on delivering quality homes at affordable prices to those most in need.
