Seeing the light on energy efficient fittings

Imagine an 80-year old travelling 8 miles to change a lightbulb they can’t afford.

Sounds crazy? Unfortunately, changes to Building Regulations are making this situation a reality for thousands of people, of all ages, across the UK.

We are encouraging the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) to challenge the common interpretation of Building Regulations which result in 3-pin or 4-pin energy saving light fixtures being installed into new and refurbished homes. MHP is voicing concerns of residents who are frustrated about the impracticality of these light fittings as the bulbs are costly and difficult to replace.

We believe there are better ways to make the same, if not more savings from energy efficiency in lighting. We are calling for a revised approach from Building Control that allows for the installation of standard fittings, pre-fit with 2-pin low energy bulbs instead of the three or four-pin fittings. For more detail on this issue and why we are raising it, see further information.

We know that this is a common experience shared across the sector, but to help us make the case, we need support and further case studies from other RSL’s, local authorities, individuals and other stakeholders who agree that these fittings are impractical, ineffective and unnecessary.
