CASE STUDY: Roundshaw - A community through partnership

A resident-led governance and community board was set up to oversee the replacement of 1,144 failing concrete buildings and high rise apartments with 1,079 traditional homes and timber-framed buildings with private gardens.

The heart of Roundshaw, Croydon was re-imagined. New community facilities were built, including a church, post office, GP surgery, housing management office and the award-winning Phoenix community centre. S elected for special recognition in the Deputy PM's Award for Sustainable Communities 2005, the centre is also home to the Beehive cafe, a successful social enterprise that reinvests profits into the community.

Tenants of the 600 homes retained by the local authority have now voted to transfer their stock. They will benefit from another multi-million pound refurbishment project which will take the homes and estate beyond the government’s Decent Homes standard.
