High five approach to grass roots project
Wednesday 12 August saw elderly residents from Metropolitan Housing Trust’s scheme Passmore Edward House play host to a visit from Lynn Featerstone, MP for Wood Green. The visit formed part of National Allotment Week.
The scheme, based in Bounds Green, recently completed the second year of a three year inter-generational project working with children from the local primary school. The project saw residents at the scheme passing on traditional skills such as rag rug making, weaving and gardening to children at the school.
Lynn visited Passmore Edward House to hear from residents about the project, the harvest presentation that was held at the scheme and the allotment which is on site at Passmore Edwards House.
Speaking of the project Lynn said: “It’s wonderful; I’m really impressed with the scheme and the project. Schemes like this really build a sense of community and generational bridge building; both sides benefit which is brilliant.”
One resident said of the project: “Its fantastic, even now the children see you out shopping and say ‘hi’ and give you high fives. It makes us feel young again.”
Marion Carden, Scheme Manager, said: “We’re delighted to have Lynn visit us. The project was a great success and we aim to keep it going as long as possible. The inter-generational project is history in the making.”
She continues: “The residents of schemes like Passmore Edwards House are vibrant and can offer a great deal to the local community regardless of age.”
