Charity fundraiser gains support from international poet
On November 12 local Nottingham resident Sheree Russell will be embarking on a six day trek in Kerala southern India to raise money for Homeless International. As part of her drive to raise funds for the trek, Sheree organised a fundraising event which was headlined by internationally renowned poet Benjamin Zephaniah.
Sheree is a resident of Spirita, one of the largest housing associations in the Midlands, and is also a member of both Metropolitan Housing Partnership and Granta Housing Society Boards.
Sheree has been supported by Djanogly City Academy with the aims to engage young people and the community. The aim of the event was to achieve this and go towards raising funds for Homeless International.
The event, which took place on Friday 23rd October, involved local residents with the highlight of the event being a performance by Benjamin Zephaniah.
Sheree said of the Benjamin Zephaniah’s performance: ‘It was an amazing event and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We managed to raise over £1,500 that night!’
She continues: We were delighted that Benjamin agreed to perform and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Homeless International, a very worthy cause.’
Sheree sees the trek as a means to challenge herself physically and mentally. As part of her training regime she has been visiting the gym, walking in her local area and in the Peak District.
Sheree is part of a larger group supported by MHP which includes three residents and two members of MHP staff.
The event took place at Djanogly City Academy Theatre, Sherwood Rise and was a full house.
