Moorlands new community centre opens its doors
The new community centre at the heart of the Moorlands housing complex in Brixton opened its doors to the local community on Saturday 22 November, completing a 10-year regeneration project on the estate.
The centre’s opening day showcased a variety of activities including tai-chi, aerobics and yoga. Children enjoyed getting their faces painted and participated in a drawing and caricature workshop, as well as competed against each other on the Nintendo Wii. Adults enjoyed a group session on line dancing from the Golden Age Club and belly-dancing lessons, as well as being able to get their hands tattooed with henna (mehndi).
There were also training workshops in basic IT healthy eating, and employment and careers advice. All this topped off with some local Caribbean food made for a great day out for all the community. Residents were offered the chance to name the centre – reflecting the fact that the centre is a resource integral to the community. The winning entry will be announced in the New Year.
The centre, on Corry Drive, provides a hub for the local community offering a range of facilities for all age groups with those attending the opening event having a chance to let us know what activities they would like to see. Local residents can visit the centre and make use of the main hall and meeting rooms. These will be available for private hire to local people for a small fee for meetings and family celebrations. There is also an IT suite, a kitchen and a garden on the site. Hiring rates start from just £5p/h for the kitchen, IT suite and meeting rooms and £15 – 20p/h for the main hall.
Once the centre is established, there will be a range of services for all age groups including:
- Flipside youth services will base their service at the centre, including games and sport activities, and training and employment sessions for young people.
- The Golden Age Club will regularly hold activities such as carpet bowls, line dancing, bingo, tea dancing and keep fit.
The centre’s opening times are: Monday to Saturday from 8am – 10pm
Sundays – Bank Holidays from 11am – 6pm. An advisory group of residents and local stakeholders meets six times a year to advise us on the day-to-day running and management of the community centre.
Please feel free to visit the community centre to see the brand new facilities and the eco-friendly building, and give us your views.
