Tasting the fruits of their labour

On Wednesday 11 March, Green Routes in Finsbury Park was buzzing with excitement and the aromatic fragrance of food. Participants of the High Rise Gardening project were treated to a live healthy eating cooking demonstration by Metropolitan Support Trust (MST) staff.

The High Rise Gardening project, which is part of the MHT London’s Activate London programme,  ran sessions for people who either live in high rise flats or who have no access to gardens. The vegetables they grew over several weeks were used in the demonstration which included curried chicken and salad nicoise. Attendees where shown how to cook five recipes which were prepared by staff members Lorna Esternine, Jason Kemp and Adam Woolmer.

Over 50 residents attended along with members of the local Young At Heart group. Far from dull, the lively audience fully engaged in the demonstration; asking questions, offering their own twist on preparing similar meals and enjoying the prepared food.

“A lot of this is about choice - finding out what you like. A lot of recipes are adaptable so you can try out new things and share ideas. It's a great social occasion.” said Adam Woolmer, Support Manager for Green Routes.

*The Activate London scheme is funded by the Big Lottery Fund. Led by Peabody, the well-being projects are delivered in partnership with CBHA, Circle Anglia, Family Mosaic, Metropolitan Housing and Southern Housing Group.
