MHT London sparks healthy appetite amongst older residents

The Metropolitan Housing Trust London Golden Age Group will be holding an "Eat Wise, Eat Well" healthy lunch on Wednesday 11 February at the Moorlands Community Centre, Brixton. The event is funded by the Activate London initiative and forms part of a new drive by the MHT London Community Investment team to promote healthy eating amongst older residents.

Starting at noon the lunch will have a Valentine’s Day theme and see residents enjoy a specially catered lunch menu provided by local business, Maria’s Kitchen. As part of the lunch, residents will be provided with healthy options and alternatives, advice and leaflets on healthy eating. Residents will have a chance to learn how to eat healthily on a budget, prepare quick and simple meals and also create variety in their diet. The aim will be to educate group members on the importance of different food groups and the nutritional importance of the different foods.

Samantha Harding says of the lunch: "Eating healthily is vital at any age, if not more so once we reach a particular stage in life. We hope this lunch will educate residents that eating healthy is not expensive, boring or needs to be fussy. The fact that we’re combining it with Valentine’s day is an added bonus as it tends to be something associated with younger people which is a bit unfair."
