The Olympics come to Chalkhill estate

MHT London will be holding their own Olympics which will be taking place on Chalkhill estate in Wembley. The event will run from Monday 11 to  Friday 15 and be held at the Chalkhill primary school. Games will include sports such as fencing, archery, boxing, judo and basketball.

Aimed at 8 – 16 year olds it is hoped the week long sporting event will have a two fold impact for the children of Chalkhill estate. Firstly, the games will provide activities for children within the area, a welcome break and support for parents with children on holiday. This will also give an engaging alternative for the local children, which will reduce potential anti-social behaviour.  The second expectation is that the local children will become more engaged within sports by experiencing and participating in sports they may have not considered and perhaps, ultimately one day becoming competing athletes.

Qualified coaches will be provided by Brent Council Sports Service who will oversee the sporting activities throughout the week. Brent’s sports development officer Tristian Wesley says of the games: ‘We are delighted to be a part of this initiative, not only does it promote sports among young children, it brings the community together’.

Mary Lee, chair of the trustees of the local community centre, says of the pending games: ‘We're really excited, there is a buzz in the area and everyone is looking forward to it; we don't have to wait until 2012 which is great. I think it’s a wonderful idea, as anything that engages young children is valuable, especially for parents trying to occupy children over the summer.'

Games start daily from 10am – 4pm. There will be classes available for those that do not wish to compete but experience the array of sporting opportunities.
