Metropolitan Housing Partnership makes London better today

On Friday 16th May, Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) joins forces with Business in the Community in a London wide initiative, London Better Together Day.

London Better Together Day gives organisations the opportunity to show they care about the communities they work in by participating in one of two ways. Companies can either encourage staff members to volunteer by working on local projects such as gardening activities or play host to external organisations who provide staff with a team challenge at a nominated scheme or project.

MHP will be making a unique contribution on the day by doing both, not only will staff be volunteering but we’ll also be working in partnership with recruitment company Badenoch and Clark whose staff will be carrying out a team challenge at Green Routes, a Metropolitan Support Trust (MST) project in Finsbury Park.

The Badenoch and Clark team will undertake tasks such as setting up new compost bins, weeding, building flower beds, adding new plants and tidying the pond and sitting area in the park. Green Routes is a Horticultural Training Centre in Finsbury Park. It provides horticultural training and activities to local people from vulnerable and excluded groups such as those who are unemployed, people with learning difficulties, mental health support needs, community groups, young offenders and people living with HIV.

And over at Haringey Play Association in Tottenham, Somerford Grove, ten MHP staff volunteers will have their own team challenge as they create a new herb garden and flower bed, paint an external wall, weeding and repair fencing. This open access adventure play-ground, is in a deprived area of Tottenham and caters for children aged 2-15.

MHP’s Maria Reguera, Making a Link Co-ordinator said:

“Team challenges like this are a great opportunity to support and raise awareness of vital activities provided by community groups. Staff enjoy the chance to use their skills in a different environment while strengthening their ‘team spirit’ by working together to finish the challenge on time.”

Katy Crothall, Senior Manager at partner organisation Badenoch & Clark shares in the excitement of the day said:

"Badenoch & Clark are looking forward to getting their hands dirty and being involved in London Better Together Day’s bringing a large number of businesses together on the same day to help the London Community. We are extremely happy to be helping the Metropolitan Support Trust's horticultural project and to contribute to something which will hopefully be enjoyed for a long time to come."

Cathy O’Leary, Senior Play Worker at Somerford Grove Community Project is looking forward to the day and said:

“We always value the help of volunteers as our grants do not cover all the costs of keeping the project open. A team of volunteers can achieve wonders in one day. It will be great to see the faces of the children and families afterwards when they see all the improvements that can be achieved in such a short time”.
