MHP eco-home development short listed for housing award

MHP celebrates its new eco home development, Angela Carter Close, being shortlisted for the sustainable housing awards 2008. The award celebrates projects and organisations that champion housing sustainability best practice. The ceremony will be taking place on the 11th November at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.

A total of 14 trophies are up for grabs which recognise the best housing projects, the top social housing landlords and a other categories such as sustainable smaller social housing project of the year, green social housing champion of the year, sustainability innovation award and Sustainable social housing landlord of the year.

Angela Carter Close is located in the London Borough ofLambeth in Brixton and comprises of large family properties made up of nine houses and plus 3 flats. Two of the homes have been adapted to provide full wheelchair access throughout the property each with its own covered car-port. The houses are timber frame construction using 95% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) timber and were completed in less than two years and has achieved EcoHomes 'Excellent' standard. Five of the nine homes have been fitted with solar thermal panels providing residents with heating and hot water. Part funded by Lambeth Council, the solar panels offer a welcome savings on bills to residents. Within each property there is storage for recycling along with a large external storage area for bicycles. Among the other sustainability aspects of the development are the large cavity walls with recycled newspaper insulation, low flush w.c’s , water flow restrictors on taps and a 220 litre water butt in each garden.

The land was previously the remnants of very large gardens, which had been left to become overgrown and latterly had been used for prostitution and drug taking. The development is just a few hundred yards from Brixton High Road, and the transformation of this site has been welcomed by residents of the surrounding area.

Matthew Bush, Environmental Sustainability Manager said of the development: ‘We are excited and proud to be short listed. Angel Carter Close shows that we are building much needed affordable family sized homes in the inner city that look good, are sustainable and are cheaper for our residents to heat. Our residents are saving the planet and saving money’.
