Community investment - Aim 2: develop the potential of children, young people and adults

Race for Space

Boys playing footballOur Race for Space programme funds up to six community sports projects every year.

Last summer our Sports Development Officer organised a fortnight of football coaching sessions run by West Ham FC coaches.

80 residents between the ages of 8 and 16 attended the free sessions, with an average of 35 participants per day. And the programme was so popular that we ran more sessions with West Ham FC during the October half term.

Many people don’t have the finances to be able to participate in sports, so we are proud to have been part of this initiative.

Making citizenship matter to young people

Citizenship awardsThanks to a donation from Metropolitan Home Ownership, 25 young people from east London joined U R BRITAIN, a programme that motivates young people across all faith and ethnic groups to become active and informed citizens.

The young people developed their knowledge of how the democratic process works and how they can play a part. They took part in workshops and discussions on how they could take action in their own communities to change things for the better.

They also visited the House of Commons and met Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham. Some of the young people who were involved in the project are now hoping to get first hand experience of decision-making within government by doing work experience with MPs.
